Education

We offer the following courses at the Undergraduate level, as part of the Mechanical Engineering Degree at UCL.

Elasticity and Plasticity

The module covers the fundamental aspects of the theory of elasticity and plasticity, and its applications to materials modelling and structural design. This includes classical problems of plane stress and strain of elastic and elasto-plastic materials, end loading problems relating to both torsion and shear, introduction to finite element analysis, plastic stress-strain relations, yield criteria and limit analysis. Although the emphasis is on theory, real-world applications are used as motivating and practice examples.

Experiments with Digital Image Correlation (DIC) were performed to show the material responses:

Uniaxial tensile test on stainless steel

Uniaxial tensile test and shear bands in aluminium thin plate

Uniaxial tensile test on 3D printed nylon SLS

Engineering Dynamics

This module was delivered during the academic year 2017/2018 to the first-year students of the BEng and MEng program in Mechanical Engineering at UCL. The course covers the kinematics and kinetics of particles, systems of particles and rigid bodies.

The ‘Elasticity day‘ 2022 will take place at UCL on Thursday 19th of May 2022. Here is the program and book of abstracts.
